Das italienische Verb „mancare “ (vermissen, fehlen, missen, ableben) ist unregelmäßig, auch wenn es seinen Stamm manc- nicht ändert. Allerdings folgt dem Buchstaben „c“ oftmals ein „h“ statt dem Vokal „a“. Mancare kann neben vermissen und fehlen auch ableben bedeuten. In Italien üblich ist der Ausdruck „Lei / Lui mancava“, was so viel heißt wie „Sie / Er ist gestorben“ oder auch „Lei è mancata“ bzw. Lui è mancato“. „Mi manchi“ hingegen bedeutet „Du fehlst mir“ und „Ti manca un lavoro“ „Dir fehlt eine Arbeit“.
